The last Sunday evening of the holidays: a normal mix of feelings
3 min read
There is a particular quality to the last Sunday of the holidays. The bags are ready, the alarm is set, and nobody in the house is quite sure how they feel about tomorrow.
Several feelings at once is not a contradiction
A child can want to see their friends again and dread the noise of the corridor. A parent can be relieved that the routine returns and sad that the slow mornings end. Both are true at the same time, and neither cancels the other.
The body often speaks first
Stomach ache, difficulty falling asleep, irritability over nothing: anticipation frequently shows up physically before anyone can name it. Saying "your body is getting ready, that is normal" often does more than asking what is wrong.
What helps on that evening
Prepare the visible things the day before so the morning holds no surprise: clothes out, bag by the door, breakfast decided.
Keep the evening low: no big conversation about the year ahead, no long list of expectations. One predictable thing to look forward to the next day is usually enough.
Frequently asked questions
- Should I make my child talk about their worries?
- Offer the space, do not force it. Some children process out loud, others need the evening to stay ordinary. Both are fine.
