A Gentle Transition: Settling the Class After Recess
3 min read
Coming back from recess is often a peak of noise and high energy. Without clear cues, it can take 5 to 10 minutes to bring the group back together. A guided, consistent transition shortens this moment for all students.
Before You Begin
Helpful materials: a consistent sound or visual signal (chime, hand signal, visual timer), and a visual cue or pictogram of the upcoming activity displayed on the board.
The 6-Step Transition Routine
1. Give a 2-minute warning signal before the bell. Giving advance notice prevents abrupt stops to games or conversations, which are often a major source of frustration.
2. Gather in the exact same spot every time. Having a fixed spatial anchor (a line on the ground, a specific door) prevents wandering and reassures students who need predictable routines.
3. Lead a brief calming moment before stepping inside. The body is still running on playground energy; a few deep breaths or a brief moment of quiet helps bring physical energy down before trying to focus.
4. Take care of water and bathroom needs before sitting down. Addressing basic physical needs first prevents constant interruptions and up-and-down movement once the lesson begins.
5. Settle into seats with the next activity's visual cue already on display. Knowing immediately what comes next eliminates uncertainty, which is a frequent trigger for restless behavior.
6. Start with a single, short, visual instruction. Capture attention immediately before focus drifts, rather than stringing several multi-step directions together.
Helpful Tip
Keep the exact same cue every single time (the same chime, the same gesture, or the same phrase). Predictability and repetition build comfort—not novelty, even when well-intentioned.
